WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Four things that separate a great AI sound tool from a frustrating one — the exact criteria we judge every tool on. Run through them before you enter a card number.

01 / OUTPUT QUALITY

Does it actually sound good?

At first, only one test matters: does the raw output sound mixed and usable, or thin and obviously synthetic? Generate in the genre you actually need — not the demo's cherry-picked one — and listen on real speakers before you trust the marketing reel.

  • Mix-ready output, not a rough sketch
  • Strength in your genre, not just the demo
  • Vocals that hold up, if you need them
02 / STEMS & CONTROL

How much can you change?

A one-shot generation is a slot machine. The tools worth paying for let you steer — separate the stems, regenerate one section, lock what you like and reroll the rest. Control is the whole difference between "close enough" and "exactly right."

  • Stem separation (drums, bass, melody, FX)
  • Regenerate or extend sections, not whole tracks
  • Editing that doesn't force a restart

03 / RANGE & USE CASE

Music, voice, or sound design?

"AI sound" covers very different jobs. Some tools nail full songs with vocals; others are built for voiceover and SFX, or for royalty-free background beds. Match the tool to the task — a song generator makes a poor foley library, and vice versa.

  • Full songs vs loops vs one-shot SFX
  • Voice & sound effects, if that's your need
  • Foley, drones & textures for film and games
04 / LICENSING & OWNERSHIP

Can you actually ship it?

The most boring spec is the most important one. Read the licence before you subscribe: are outputs yours to monetize, is it cleared for commercial and client work, and does any of that depend on the plan? "Royalty-free" means nothing if the terms quietly claw it back.

  • Commercial rights, in writing
  • Ownership that survives cancellation
  • No PRO registration or per-use royalties
